The Metamorphosis of Time in Western Civilization and the Future of Man

European civilization, to a very large extent, derives from Christianity. Christianity shaped many of the basic worldviews of Western Civilization. Among other things, the ex nihilo creation of the world and the worldview of a linear, finite, teleological, eschatological and “ascending” time gave Western Civilization a future-oriented character and formed a base for the development of science in Europe.

Today, in postmodernity, the future – centric character of Western Civilization is at risk. We are being led to a neo-pagan reading of the world that can threaten a fundamental element of European cultural identity. A renewal of the European cultural paradigm is needed and in this effort the contribution of Greece can be very important.
