Based on historical observations on connections between human space exploration and religious, ethical and philosophical deliberations, this talk will try and extrapolate future developments in human society on its way of leaving the planet.

Becoming a solar system civilization necessitates analysing the challenges and chances of spreading human society to yet uninhabited worlds. Humanity needs to ask the question on what grounds and with what aim they will be leaving the planet. This will challenge our understanding of ourselves and our place in the universe.
