Dr. Paul Vare

Starting his career as a teacher nearly 40 years ago, Paul quickly moved into community-based environmental education, firstly in the UK and then East Africa. His interests in education for sustainable development (ESD) have taken him from the Tropics to the Arctic, working for the voluntary sector while liaising closely with communities, multi-national companies and government agencies. Currently he runs doctoral programmes at the University of Gloucestershire’s School of Education and Humanities where his research, academic publications and books continue to focus on learning for sustainability.

Paul serves as academic advisor to the ESD Steering Committee of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, he is a member of the Adult Advisory Board of the youth-led campaign, Teach the Future, and is Chair of the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers (UCET) Forum for Continuing Professional Development. Should he ever succeed in retiring, he hopes to resume the landscape painting that he gave up when the day jobs took over.
